2019 Murray County Fair Apple Pie Contest in Memory of Gail Byers

The owners of the Stonegate Apple Orchard, Jason and Jennifer Kirchner, have decided to make the 2019 Murray County Fair Apple Pie Baking Contest the final year for the contest and will host the event in memory of Gail Byers.

Gail started the pie contest around 2008 when the Byers family owned Stonegate Orchard. The Kirchner’s continued the tradition, but after Gail’s unexpected passing a few months ago it seems like the right time for the contest to take a break.

According to Jenni Kirchner, “Gail loved to bake, but never competed in the contest while they owned the orchard. She finally had a chance to bake one of her own pies and won the contest in 2017 to much applause by the audience in attendance.”

“This year just seems to be the right time to end the contest and to hold the event in her memory”, Kircher continued.

The contest will take place on Thursday, August 15th. Registration starts at noon in Heritage Hall with the pie judging contest beginning at 1:00 p.m. Pie and ice cream will be served to the public after the judging for a small fee to cover the expenses. Any proceeds from the event will be donated to Murray County Fair in Gail’s memory.

Let’s make this event BIG this year. Get your recipes out…..get set and bake!
